Tunisia faces hotter drier summer in 2025 impacting agriculture and health

According to a TAP report citing the National Institute of Meteorology (INM) on June 28, 2025, Tunisia is expected to experience a hotter and drier summer than usual in 2025. Temperatures across the country will likely exceed typical climatic averages, with significantly reduced rainfall.
Based on the 1991-2020 reference period, average summer temperatures are projected to range from 24.3 to 32.3°C, with total rainfall not exceeding 65mm for the season. July is forecast to have average temperatures between 25 and 33.5°C (highs of 30.5-41.2°C) and minimal rainfall (under 15mm).
August is expected to bring similar conditions, with average temperatures of 25.3-33.2°C (highs up to 40.7°C) and low rainfall (under 30mm nationwide). These forecasts reflect the accelerated warming of the Mediterranean region, a recognized global climate hotspot, which is warming approximately 20% faster than the global average
. This trend manifests in Tunisia as longer, more intense summers, impacting agriculture, public health, and water security.
